Reference planes - 3Ds max

Open 3ds max
Create plane - length segments 1 , width segments 1
Rotate if necessary to make plane vertical
hotkey e to open rotation tool
hotkey a to turn on angle snap


Import the previously created files
Open material editor (using "Slate" material editor)
select bitmap - select the file - open - select collapsed file


Selecting these options will drop an icon into the main (central) window
select standard material (double left click) again this will create an icon in the main window
link the bitmap node to the diffuse node (click n drag)
connect main standard material node to the plane
select show material in view port


If bitmap is not shown in enough detail this can be adjusted
Customise - preferences - viewports - configure driver - adjust as highlighted if necessary


Add "UVW MAP" modifier
Scroll down to bitmap fit
Reselect file and open
Bitmap will now be placed with correct scale


Select box next to UUVW Mapping in stack - Gizmo - hotkey w for movement selection
Move bitmap to correct position
Adjust size of plane to fit only front view


Select rotate tool
Select plane
Rotate 90' whilst holding shift
select copy - ok


Move new copied reference plane into more useful position
highlight UVW MAP in modifier stack - select gizmo
If necessary select flip in the appropriate field to flip the picture horizontally (normally "U" tile)
Slide bitmap along until side reference picture is visible



Highlight both reference planes (highlight by clicking - hold ctrl - click on second / drag and select)
Select manage layer via icon on top bar
Create new layer (top left icon)
Name new layer as appropriate - (since icons are selected when layer is create those items will automatically be placed into new layer otherwise icons must be highlighted, the layer highlighted, then add is selected)
Select freeze
Change tick to default layer (this tick designates which layer is in use ie anything that is created will automatically be created in this layer)
Reference pics are now frozen and can be hidden and frozen at will via layers menu
